Hi Wazers,

Over the last few days we let you know about serveral technical issues:

• Backlog in the driving sessions upload
• Slowness of the map editor
• Routing server timeouts when navigating.
• Backlog in points

So here's an explanation about what's going on and why this is all happening now (warning: it gets geeky   ).

Please keep in mind that all these issues are related to the fact that Waze is growing – which is good!

Why is this happening?

Currently, our system is divided into a few large gegraphic areas. Each one of them is handled by its own system of servers. In very general terms, the problem is that the areas are too big and our servers are having hard time keeping up with this massive growth. They are getting overloaded and sometimes fail.

So what are we gonna do about it??

Unfortunately, the solution is not as simple as adding more servers to each area. We have to rebuild the distribution structure and split the system into smaller areas that are better suited for the servers' capacity.

And then?

As soon as the split is complete, you will notice:

• significant improvement in the client's ability to calculate routes (that means that the "routing server timeouts" should hardly pop up)
• the driving session backlog will be cleared and we'll be back to updating these sessions in your archives on a daily basis
• Editor speed will be restored

When will it all be fixed?

We expect that the process of splitting the server areas will take about two weeks.

You may notice an improvement in the editor speed even sooner.

Wait, you didn't mention the points!

Indeed. This is because the points are actually not related to the same issue. We are also upgrading the points process.

Currently your points should be updated as of April 14th. The process should be working again in a about a week, and all of your points will appear in your scoreboard. Please rest assured that no points will be lost. They are just delayed.

Also, points from driving sessions (points for kilometers/ miles) will be updated as soon as the driving sessions are uploaded.

As for the map tiles – they have been updated this morning.
